Launched in October 2024, Migrant Inclusion Teaching Resources or MITR is a social initiative geared towards children of migrants in Mumbai to increase their access to opportunities for educational and socio-economic integration. As part of our project, we have employed a multi-pronged approach that utilizes indirect and direct mechanisms to create positive change in the lives of migrant children. In its current stage, MITR is curating a comprehensive handbook for government school teachers to furnish them with tangible resources to build an inclusive classroom environment, with each chapter highlighting the nuances of migration and cultural differences to aid teachers in providing support to migrant students.
Wanting to create a more direct impact, we are also working on a handbook for student volunteers to train them in peer mentorship for recently migrated students, especially since we believe that students are more likely to respond to peers and make connections within their peer group. Hence, the handbook provides detailed guidelines on how peer mentors can foster a culture of camaraderie and belongingness. This handbook will be rolled out in several schools across Mumbai to encourage students to engage with migrant students and help them in their transition to the new socio-economic environment. Lastly, we plan to set up an online fundraising campaign proceeds of which will go towards creating a scholarship fund for migrant students in government schools across Mumbai.
